From September 7, 1.2 million Austrians will receive the climate bonus in the form of ten or five 50-euro Sodexo vouchers. These will be sent by RSa letter. Those who already accept payments from the government and whose account details are stored at FinanzOnline will receive the climate bonus directly to their account.
Initially, the payment of the climate bonus against inflation was not planned until October. To relieve the population quickly, this is already paid out starting today. Adults will receive 500 euros, and children up to 18 will receive 250 euros. To make the climate bonus environmentally friendly, the vouchers made of recycled paper and with a green design will be delivered in a climate-friendly and CO2-neutral way by Austrian Post. “The climate-friendly delivery as RSa letter offers security so that all beneficiaries personally come to their climate and anti-taxation bonus,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) in a release on Thursday.
From September 7, 2022, the personally addressed registered letters should start arriving. The 500 euro climate bonus is divided into ten 50 euro Sodexo vouchers for easier handling. Thousands of partners can redeem these from all sectors throughout Austria. For example, at various supermarkets, clothing stores, perfumeries, restaurants, and more. The complete list can be found on the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology website. Andreas Sticha, managing director of Sodexo Benefits and Rewards Services Austria, speaks of 60,000 Sodexo vouchers delivered daily to eligible persons.
Leonore Gewessler expresses her satisfaction with the measure:
“The climate bonus is a centerpiece of the eco-social tax reform. It ensures that climate-friendly behavior pays off and relieves the burden on people in our country. We all get a credit with the climate bonus and the anti-taxation bonus; the relief now comes twice as fast as originally planned: It will already be paid out to all people in Austria today.”
Automatic delivery
Registration to receive the climate bonus as a Sodexo voucher is not necessary. It is delivered automatically to everyone without their account or data stored in FinanzOnline. When taking delivery of RSa letters delivered by Austrian Post, an official photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or ID card) must be shown. This applies to home delivery and pickup at a post office.
For Post app users, the letter delivery will be announced in advance. In case of absence, the climate bonus authorization form can be filled out and presented when the letter is delivered home. Collection at a post office branch must be done in person.
Counterfeit-proof and worry-free
There are no security concerns because the vouchers are forgery-proof, thanks to numbering and a uniquely assigned barcode. Even during transport, storage and production, the coupons are secured and monitored by personnel and technology. The vouchers can be redeemed immediately after receipt until December 31, 2023, at all partners throughout Austria.
Consumer protection: Botched up climate bonus
The consumer protection association (VSV) criticizes that babies have no climate and inflation bonus. Entitlement has one, only if one is registered for half a year in Austria. As a result, there is no bonus payment for around half of the children born in Austria this year. “There the government has botched once again,” says VSV chairwoman Daniela Holzinger-Vogtenhuber. She, therefore, demands an entitlement from birth.
The Ministry of Climate emphasizes to the APA that babies would very well be entitled. Provided they have been registered in Austria for 183 days. Those who had not been reported for that long by the July 2 deadline would receive the climate bonus in the second round in February 2023.
